On my very first night in the Air Force, my supervisor told me: ‘If I ask you a question, you better know the answer.’

That challenge turned me into a relentless learner and lifelong problem solver. It also taught me something I’ve carried into every role since: questions aren’t just conversation — questions unlock systems.

That truth was tested again and again.

• In 1988, I installed the Air Force’s first email system. Bureaucracy tried to block me from training my own commander, but a General — a former POW who still flew F-15s — demanded I train him directly. The commander denied me a promotion, but I walked away with a lesson more valuable than rank: your worth isn’t defined by titles, it’s defined by the problems you solve.
• Years later, as the owner of a software company, I started every client meeting with one question: ‘If you had one piece of paper on your desk every morning, what would it say so you could make confident decisions?’ That simple question cut through the noise and gave leaders the clarity they craved.
• At the VA, I worked with doctors, unions, administrators, and veterans to redesign systems that improved care. I discovered that listening deeply was as powerful as any technology.

The Transformation
Through it all, I’ve learned three truths:
